Goddess of the Turf: The Sunline Story

Goddess of the Turf: The Sunline Story

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Annual, edited by David Bradford; HarperCollins. RRP $49.95. 109pp/50pp.

Was it simply a dull year for racing in New Zealand, or did Sunline shine so much, that a third of this book is dedicated to a career still in full flight at time of publication?

I won't comment on the state of racing over the 2001-2002 season, but I will say that this edition of the racing annual has helped promote the sport by portraying it in a colourful and glossy light. This is a coffee-table book with each chapter a highlight from the past season.

With the inclusion of a "mini-book" on Sunline -- turn the book over and voila! there's a whole new book -- this is sure to appeal to most levels of racing follower. It follows the career of the great mare from before birth to the end of her five-year-old season, in August 2001.

Goddess of the Turf tells the story of the horse, and of the people behind the horse, from her breeders, to her current owners, trainers, and riders.
