The Duchess attended an evening reception for equestrian competitors, owners and team staff from around the world to welcome them to Britain and the venue for 2012.

She met with Cyril Young, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Greenwich, BEF chairman Keith Taylor and chief executive Andrew Finding who welcomed her to Queen's house. There she was introduced to some of the event competitors including British riders Piggy French, Pippa Funnell and William Fox-Pitt with Team Manager Yogi Breisner.

The Duchess congratulated French on her lead after the dressage phase on DHI Topper W.

"HRH expressed genuine interest in the competition venue and going and held knowledgeable conversation on the virtues of Greenwich and the park to lend itself to the equestrian events for the Games," a statement from the British Equestrian Federation said.

Chief executive of the BEF Andrew Finding said: "It's fantastic for our sport to have such an active patron and notable to see how positively all riders and officials reacted to her interest and enthusiasm.

"The presence of Her Royal Highness here tonight helps us to launch Greenwich as an Olympic venue for 2012 to the world's equestrian community, a venue which looks truly stunning in its preparation format."
