About EHV

"Equine Canada is aware of one confirmed case in southern Alberta," he told Horsetalk. "That horse has been isolated and has been assessed as recovering.

"We believe that ground-zero was in horses attending a cutting horse competition in Ogden, Utah held 29 April 2011 to 08 May 2011, and has spread from there.

"We are working with the offices of the Chief Provincial Veterinarians across Canada to ascertain if there are any other cases, and to alert the Canadian equine community to take appropriate precautions.

"We expect to have sufficient hard information to issue a formal advisory to Canadian horsepeople by morning."

Maharaj said while the disease is highly contagious, it is certainly not new.

"There have been previous limited outbreaks in the United States that have been successfully contained through sound biosecurity measures.

"We believe that this will prove to be the case in Canada, but will be keeping the equine community abreast of any developments, positive or negative."
