British owners urged to complete survey

November 23, 2010

British horse owners are being encouraged to complete an online questionnaire aimed at identifying ways to prevent the introduction and spread of infectious diseases of horses and donkeys in Britain.

The University of Glasgow and the Institute of Animal Health are appealing to horse owners to complete the survey, saying only horse owners themselves can supply accurate and detailed information on the location and movements of their horses, or horses under their care and management.

"This information is vital for us to improve current prevention and control strategies for infectious diseases, such as African Horse Sickness, which could have a major impact on equine health welfare in Great Britain," said Dr Lisa Boden, from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow.

The questionnaire takes about 15 minutes to complete.
