Eleven horses perish in truck crash

May 19, 2010

Eleven horses died when a tractor-trailer carrying 30 horses overturned on a major turnpike in Oklahoma on Tuesday morning.

A police officer shot three severely injured horses at the scene soon after arriving to end their suffering.

The other severely injured horses who did not die in the crash were euthanized by a vet.

The accident happened around 6am on the Kilpatrick Turnpike, blocking one of the entrance ramps to the Turner Turnpike, which feeds Oklahoma City.

The surviving horses, most of which managed to free themselves from the wreck, were gathered into a makeshift pen, awaiting their removal. Passersby stopped to help with the horses.

Surviving horses were taken from the scene by Oklahoma City Animal Control workers to a location where the animals were to looked over in more detail by veterinarians.

Police arriving at the scene found badly hurt horses stacked inside the trailer wreck.

The driver escaped injury. The accident cause is under inquiry.
