Olympic ponies get new names

GiGi Hui receives an award for her entry in the pony-naming competition.

August 8, 2008

The two shetland ponies given to Hong Kong by the American Shetland Pony Club to celebrate the Olympic equestrian events now have new names.

A prize-presentation ceremony was held yesterday for the winner of a naming competition for the two ponies, who will be given homes in public riding schools.

The winner, 11-year-old primary student GiGi Hui, said the Chinese name "Siu Chun Bo" means precious, and "Siu Chun Kit" means remarkable, implying Hong Kong people will treasure and love the city's new equestrian ambassadors.

The ponies arrived in Hong Kong on June 6. After being in quarantine for two weeks they were stabled in the state-of-the-art facility where the Olympic eventing competitions will be held.
