Tasmania clear of equine flu

October 15, 2007

Tasmania horse owners can breathe a wheeze-free sigh of relief. The state is now almost certain to be declared clear of equine influenza within hours.

The state's Department of Primary Industries said no new suspect cases were reported overnight, and more lab reports arrived overnight in respect of the three ill horses in the north-west area of the island. Those results from the department's Mount Pleasant laboratory were all negative.

Officials expect lab results from Geelong later today.

The horse standstill within Tasmania was lifted yesterday and horses may now move around the state.

Race meetings may now go ahead. The Government has imposed a ban on all non-racing horse events involving more than 10 horses.

"At this stage, we do not know when that decision is likely to be reviewed," a spokesman said.
