Barbaro named Kentucky Horse of the Year

April 27, 2007

The late Barbaro has been named 2006 Horse of the Year by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders.

Barbaro was picked from a list of Kentucky champions from last year.

The group, in announcing the honour, said Barbaro has electrified not only the racing world, but many outside the industry with his impressive win in the Kentucky Derby.

Praise was forthcoming for Barbaro's resillience and determination to overcome his injury, and the laminitis that arose as a complication.

Barbaro, who shattered a hing leg moments after the start of the Preakness Stakes, was euthanized more than eight months after the initial injury when his laminitis worsened.

The 2007 Kentucky Derby will be run early in May.
