Barbaro has a new cast on his near hind leg and foot, to aid his recovery from the acute laminitis affecting the foot. The cast has already been removed from his broken off-side hind leg, and while video footage shows his gait as far from normal, his doctors say it is not unexpected.

The cast was placed on Wednesday by Dr Scott Morrison, head of the equine podiatry service at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. He first visited Barbaro on December 19.

Dr Dean Richardson, Barbaro's main vet, said that while Barbaro's gait looked unusual, the mechanics of his lower leg are not seriously affected, because the pastern and fetlock joints are fused.

Barbaro has been in Pennsylvaina's Intensive Care Unit of the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals since his injuries at the Preakness on May 20.
