A million-dollar prize pool has been announced for a new equestrian event in Australia solely for former thoroughbred racehorses.

“Equimillion” is an initiative of Racing NSW for off-track thoroughbreds, with the inaugural event scheduled for the October long weekend in 2023. It will be the biggest two-day equestrian event ever to be held in New South Wales, and aims to showcase the versatility and suitability of Thoroughbreds for careers outside of racing.

The former racehorses will compete across a range of disciplines and classes, such as eventing, show jumping, dressage and showing with a particular focus on amateur competitors.

Ahead of the event, Racing NSW will host an auction for recently retired Thoroughbred racehorses, with those horses sold at the auction being eligible to compete at Equimillion.

Racing NSW Chief Executive Peter V’landys that Equimillion would become the go-to event for equestrian competitors in all disciplines.

“It has the potential to carry more than the $1 million in prizemoney and in time will be not only a major equestrian event, but a major event for NSW with competitors coming from all states of Australia,” he said.

Further information on the auction and event is expected to be announced shortly.
