German-bred eventing mare Amazing VIII had to be euthanised following a catastrophic injury at fence while competing at the Millstreet International Horse Trials in Ireland on Saturday, August 24.

The 15-year-old Westfalian mare, ridden by British rider Flora Harris and owned by Caroline Harris had jumped clear up to fence 16c on the CCI4* short format course. Flora Harris was uninjured in the incident.

Harris had ridden Amazing (Adelante x Axyta, by Abano), since the mare was four. She had been retired to the broodmare paddock in 2015 after sustaining a tendon injury at Badminton. She did not get in foal and after a three-year layoff was sound again, and was brought back into work. In her first start back, at Little Downham in July 2018, she finished sixth.

Amazing VIII had six other starts this season, including finished third at Cappoquin, sixth at Bramham, and eights at Belton Park.
