An eventing horse collapsed and died during the US Eventing Association’s Area III Championships on Saturday.
Fate’s Secret, a 24-year-old thoroughbred ridden by Victoria Blake and owned by Laura Duhamel collapsed and died after completing the cross-country in the Junior Beginner Novice Rider Division at Poplar Place Farm.
Blood samples were collected from Fate’s Secret and will be analyzed as a part of the ongoing USEA Cardiopulmonary Research Study.
Blake, from Lilburn, Georgia, was unhurt. Fate’s Secret (North Of Eden x Duchess) was known as Rhett at home, and had competed up to preliminary level with Duhamel from 2001 to 2006. Rhett returned to eventing this season, and was second with Blake in the Junior Beginner Novice division at the Pine Top Spring Horse Trials.
