France dominated the first leg of the Event Rider Masters series at the Chatsworth International Horse Trials at the weekend, filling four of the top five placings.

Astier Nicholas and Piaf De Bneville landed the £16,000 first prize, with countrymen Thibaut Vallette (Qing Du Briot) and Karim Laghouag second and third (Entebbe De Hus) respectively. Britain’s Gemma Tattersall and Quicklook V finished fourth, ahead of the fifth placed French rider Mathieu Lemoine riding Bart L. Lemoine shared in the celebrations as he is a part owner of Astier’s winning horse.

The ERM series opener was run over the CIC3* course, and featured 40 riders from nine nations, including four past European Champions, competing for a prize fund of £50,000.

Following the dressage and showjumping phases, Britain’s Kitty King held a commanding lead, but an incident in cross-country start box cost several time faults and moved her down the final order.

Australia’s Chris Burton, who finished sixth was the only ERM competitor to finish inside the optimum time. Five of the starters withdrew before the cross-country, and another four were eliminated.

The second leg of the series is at the Equi-trek Bramham International Horse Trials, from June 9 to 12.
