Video: ‘Buck and Kyle’ eventing show out of the starting box

Deadpan humour peppered with informed comment has come to the eventing world with a new online video show presented by leading riders Buck Davidson and Kyle Carter.

Each episiode of the nearly hour-long “Buck and Kyle” show will feature FEI shows around the world through out the year, and begin with pre-show analysis followed up with a post-show recap.

The first episode, above, is about the Wellington Eventing Showcase in Florida, which has a very international flavor this year with the addition of three New Zealand riders, Tim Price, Dan Jocelyn and Joe Meyer, among 35 world-class combinations from four nations vying for $75,000 in prize money. Other internationals include Canadians Selena O’Hanlon and Jessica Phoenix, and Australia’s Ryan Wood.

Buck and Kyle take a look at the starting field for the show, which starts with the dressage on Friday, February 5, and wraps up with the showjumping and cross-country on Saturday, February 6. The course has been designed by Captain Mark Phillips.

The pair share their thoughts on each of the horses and riders taking part, and at the end of the show, choose their teams. This episode, their show continues into the dark of night, “Because showed up Buck half an hour late. Anyone who knows him is probably used to that, but I like punctual,” Carter says. “I was working,” Davidson replies.

The competition starts with dressage, on Friday, February 5, and wraps up with the showjumping and cross-country on Saturday, February 6.

For every event, the pair will choose a “Buck Team” and a “Kyle Team” of four riders (like the Olympic team format). Not surprisingly, the pair have a wager on the result, and the winner has to ride one of the other’s horses at one of the competitions. “That scares me a bit”, Carter says, “because I’ve seen Buck’s horses, and I’m riding better horses at the moment … and I don’t think Buck will be nice enough to give me one of the ones I actually want.”

Fans are invited to send in their team picks to fanmail@buckandkyle.com, with the Fan Winner announced in the show’s recap program.

The show aims to engage fans and build interest in before and after major events, and each episode will also feature a “shout out” to a worthy cause, with S1E1 featuring Henry Trice, a young boy who has had a heart transplant and whose family is struggling with expenses. Henry’s aunt rides with Kyle.
