Australia’s Shane Rose retained the top two positions to shut out Kiwi eventer Clarke Johnstone from a win in the CCI4* at the Australian International Three-Day-Event in Adelaide on Sunday.
Rose used one of the fences he had in hand on cross-country leader CP Qualified, to finish with 49.3 penalties, ahead of his second mount, Virgil, who went clear and finished on 50.8, with Johnstone third on Balmoral Sensation with 54.10.
Clear rounds appeared hard to come by in the final jumping phase, with only four clear rounds. CP Qualified and Balmoral Sensation were joined by fourth placegetter Parkiarrup Illicit Liaison and Sonja Johnson (59.4) and the mover of the field, fifth placed Kinnordy Gatow, who had been 12th after the cross-country with Michaele Martindale (69.9).
Three rails down caused Katja Weimann and BP Flamboyant to drop just one place to sixth (72.3). The combination had been second after dressage, but cross-country time faults dropped them to fifth on Saturday.
