Two zebras who escaped from a circus went on the run for half-an-hour across western Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon.
The pair, trailing their lead ropes, disrupted traffic and startled locals as they made their way 3 kilometres across the city.
Police followed the zebras slowly in their vehicles as various attempts were made to recapture them.
The pair were safely captured and were reported to have suffered no injuries. The first one was recaptured about 2.20pm, but the other remained on the loose 20 minutes longer.
“Zebras in custody. They are already sporting old-timey prisoner getup ahead of trial and sentencing,” Philadelphia Police joked on Twitter.
The zebras had escaped from the UniverSoul Circus, exiting the circus compound through the front gates. Circus personnel are investigating how the escape occurred.
Police officers were quickly alerted and got on the tale of the pair.
Passers-by who caught snippets of the action posted their pictures and even videos clips on to Twitter.
