A South African showjumping horse and rider have been provisionally suspended by the FEI over a failed drug test.

The horse Felix Van De Mispelaere tested positive for the banned substance Minoxidil.

Minoxidil is a vasodilator – it causes blood vessels to dilate.

Samples were taken from the horse at a CSI1*-W event in Polokwane, South Africa, on August 29. He was ridden by Jonathan Clarke to a win in the competition.

Clarke was provisionally suspended from the day he was notified of the result – October 21 – and Felix Van De Mispelaere has been provisionally suspended for two months, as stipulated under the FEI’s anti-doping regulations.

Clarke and the horse’s owner can seek a preliminary hearing before the FEI Tribunal to request the lifting of the provisional suspensions.
