Gold for Singapore, Indonesia at South East Asian Games

sea-games-logoSingapore has won gold in the team showjumping event at the South East Asian Games on their home turf, finishing on zero penalties, relegating Thailand into the silver position and Malaysia into bronze.

The Singapore team, consisting of 2013 individual gold medallist Janine Khoo, Catherine Chew, Su-Yen Cheong and Predrag Marjanovic all had clear rounds to seal the win.

All three members of the Thai team faulted, gfiving them a final score of 12 penalties, with Malaysia on 16. Just one Malaysian rider finished with a clean slate, Sharmini Ratnasingham, 29, riding Arcoda L.

Indonesia, which won the jumping team event at the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar, was fifth with 46 penalties.

Team dressage

Indonesia made amends in the dressage teams competition, taking gold with a score of 206.579% from Singapore, which won silver with 201.711, with Malaysia in the bronze medal position on 170.737.

Friday’s dressage action was graced by the presence of Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was reportedly there to watch her own horse – named Myanma A-Hla, or “the beauty of Myanmar” – perform.

The Games hosts two equestrian events – dressage and showjumping – in both team and individual competitions.Eleven countries – Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Brunei, Thailand, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Laos, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Cambodia – are taking part in the Games, which is held every second year and hosts 36 sports and 402 events. Previously hosting the Games in 1973, 1983 and 1993, Singapore’s fourth time hosting the games is especially significant to the republic as it celebrates its 50th year of independence in 2015.

The SEA Games were first held in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1959.

The equestrian events are being held at the Singapore Turf Club Riding Centre, which hosted the equestrian jumping events at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

The 30,000-square-metre compound is an internationally recognised facility with an outdoor and indoor arena, and a fully-equipped veterinary surgery. It received the “Highly Commended” standard from the British Horse Society (BHS) in three areas – livery yard, riding centre, and training centre. This is the highest level of approval that any equestrian business may attain from the BHS.
