Zenyatta’s dam Vertigineux died late last year after suffering a bout of colic, owner Coolmore Stud has revealed. She was aged 19.
The stud said this week that Vertigineux, by Kris S and out of the Forli mare For the Flag, suffered an acute colic last year and was sent straight to the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, “where everything was done to save her but unfortunately this was not possible”.
Vertigineux was covered by Tapit in 2013 when she failed to get in foal. Her last is her unnamed two-year-old full-brother to Zenyatta.
Vertigineaux had progeny earnings of more than $8.5 million, of which $7.3 million is credited to Zenyatta. She was the dam of seven other foals, including the multiple Grade 1 winner Balance (by Thunder Gulch), who is now at stud. Several of Vertigineaux’s progeny are still racing.
Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year, was famous in her days on the racetrack for her 19 consecutive victories in graded stakes events, including 13 grade one races, which inspired a legion of devoted fans the world over. She was retired in 2010.
