Canadian eventer Jessica Phoenix is recovering in hospital after being injured in a fall on the cross-country at the Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event in Allentown, New Jersey, at the weekend.
Phoenix, of Uxbridge, Ontario, sustained multiple injuries when she fell from Exultation at jump six of the CCI 2* division. She was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she underwent laparoscopic surgery for damage to her liver.
A spokesman for the Jersey Fresh horse trials said Phoenix broke three ribs and fractured her sacrum in the fall.
Phoenix, 31, left ICU late on Tuesday, and is expected to make a full recovery.
Exultation, an 11-year-old thoroughbred gelding, was not injured in the accident.
Phoenix has represented Canada at international level for several years, winning individual gold at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, where she also won team silver.
