A £25,000 Safety Innovation Prize has been announced by British Eventing to spearhead research into safety development and research in the cross country phase.

The prize has been launched to engage those in the sport as well as supporters, fans, sponsors and the general public, to explore ways in which to potentially further reduce the risk in the sport.

As part of the 2014 – 2016 British Eventing Risk Management Strategy, the organisation set the aim of continually and actively investigating new safety mechanisms as well as finding support and funding for potential and existing research.

BE Chief Executive Mike Etherington-Smith said BE saw safety and welfare of horse and rider as the number one priority, and had been a leader in the area of risk management for many years.

“We are all committed to finding additional ways of minimising risk and we hope that this Safety Innovation Prize will spark a lot of interest inside and outside the sport and be the catalyst for some new ideas.”

The full terms, conditions and rules for the BE Innovation Prize will be announced on June 1.
