Rotational fall claims life of eventing mare at US event
Dream Girl, an 18-year-old Quarter Horse/Canadian Warmblood mare died on February 4 after a rotational fall on cross country at Full Gallop Farm’s February Horse Trials in Aiken, South Carolina.
She was competing in the preliminary division by Indra Rapinchuk-Souccar, 16, who sustained a broken femur in the fall.
The accident happened at fence 11b, a rolled wedge following a drop bank. Dream Girl was attended by Dr Stephanie Davis and a medical crew, but she died shortly after from her injuries.
Rapinchuk-Souccar was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, where she underwent surgery to insert a rod and four screws into her femur.
The combination had been together since 2011, and they won at the Little Bromont CIC* last year, qualifying them for the Area I CH-J* team at the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships. There, they finished 27th individually with a clear cross country round.
