Police investigate after horse butchered in Florida

Police in Florida are investigating after the butchered remains of a seven-year-old pet horse name Pootie were found in Hialeah Gardens, Miami.

The mare was reportedly slaughtered inside a barn and had meat removed.

Her owners discovered her remains on Wednesday afternoon. Local media named her owner as Rolando Serrano, who told television station NBC 6: “Who could do that to animals?”

He told media he could not understand how someone could hurt an animal in such a way.

Serrano and his family had owned the grey mare for less than a month. Other horses reportedly housed in the same barn were not injured.

Parts of southern Florida have a problem with illegal slaughter operations.

There is also a black-market trade in horse meat, with a high-profile string of cases about two years ago in which pet horses were butchered for their meat. It resulted in authorities implementing tougher laws.
