Police in Florida are investigating after the butchered remains of a seven-year-old pet horse name Pootie were found in Hialeah Gardens, Miami.

The mare was reportedly slaughtered inside a barn and had meat removed.

Her owners discovered her remains on Wednesday afternoon. Local media named her owner as Rolando Serrano, who told television station NBC 6: “Who could do that to animals?”

He told media he could not understand how someone could hurt an animal in such a way.

Serrano and his family had owned the grey mare for less than a month. Other horses reportedly housed in the same barn were not injured.

Parts of southern Florida have a problem with illegal slaughter operations.

There is also a black-market trade in horse meat, with a high-profile string of cases about two years ago in which pet horses were butchered for their meat. It resulted in authorities implementing tougher laws.

Where are any humane groups stirred by this brutality?
