Police in the far north of New Zealand have posted a picture on Facebook of a horse being transported on the open deck of a small truck, saying they were “speechless”.
Houhora Police, in Northland, reported that the vehicle had been seen at open-road speed on State Highway 1.
Asked by a Facebook user whether the driver had been ticketed, a police officer responded: “I didn’t personally see it – this photo has been sent to me from over the weekend – and several different people have seen it.
“But enquiries will be made as to exactly what was going on and then a decision made as to a course of action.”
Police confirmed they had the number plate of the vehicle, which had been deliberately obscured before posting on Facebook, but the driver had yet to be questioned.
The picture attracted a raft of comments on Facebook, many making light of the image.
However, others criticised the actions of the driver.
It is understood the image was taken in the Kaitaia area, with one Facebook user reporting that he saw the horse leaving the Ahipara area, some 13 kilometres away.
The police responded: “Really – Ahipara?? This picture taken in Kaitaia … so wasn’t just going around the corner then?”
