Young showjumper Jessica Mendoza has leapt 80 places up the world rankings to become the second-top British female in the FEI Longines World rankings.
The 18-year-old is now ranked at 142, above some big names including William Funnell and Nick Skelton. The leading British female is Laura Renwick.
Mendoza’s hugely successful year was capped off last weekend when she took out the Gucci Paris Masters CSI2*Grand Prix with Spirit T. This followed hot on the heels of her victory in the International Young Riders Grand Prix in The Netherlands the previous week, with Nuggets L’Amandour.
“It’s been an incredible year and Paris was the icing on the cake. We had lost out in earlier classes by knocking the last and that was very much in my mind, but this time Spirit pulled off a well deserved clear,” Mendoza said.
Earlier this year she moved to a second training and competition base in Eindhoven in The Netherlands. Team Mendoza’s track record for talent spotting and Jessica’s skill at bringing horses on has gone from strength to strength this year, in what is only her second competitive season in horses. Her string now numbers over 12 and includes Antwerp GCT winner (and now Paris Gucci Masters Grand Prix winner) Spirit T; and London GCT and Eindhoven Derby winner, Ramiro de Belle Vue; as well as some promising youngsters including I Do Van de Kwakkelhoek and Jonker Van Sombeke.
The rider has launched a new website, which features the facilities at her new yard, which she says helped kick-start her campaign to climb the World Rankings.
“It’s been an amazing year and I am aiming to finish it in the World’s Top 100, if I can,” Mendoza said.
