Seventeen horses are reported to have perished in a huge barn fire in southwest Michigan, in the United States.

Tuesday’s fire at Smithfield Stables is also understood to have claimed the life of a show dog.

The barn complex, which was destroyed, included an apartment overhead, which was safely vacated as the blaze took hold.

Fifteen fire departments went to the scene in Cass County, but were unable to save the building.

The barn was located in Elkhart Road, just south of Edwardsburg.

The alarm was raised around 4.30pm.

It is believed most of the horses in the barn were boarders.
