Zenyatta’s 2014 War Front filly has been euthanised following a paddock accident at Lanes End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky.
The filly, nicknamed “Z Princess”, was euthanised at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital on Tuesday.
Lane’s End Farm general manager Mike Cline said in a statement that the loss of the weanling filly was heartbreaking. “She was a member of our family and had just begun to make her mark on the world. This is a heartbreaking loss for those who knew and loved her.”
A statement from Lane’s End Farm said: “As caretakers of these Thoroughbreds, we collectively mourn the loss of this beautiful filly.
“On behalf of the Farish family and the entire staff at Lane’s End Farm, our condolences go out to Jerry and Ann, Team Zenyatta and all the great fans who support Zenyatta.”
No other details about the nature of the accident were available.
Team Zenyatta said its planned 2014 Zenyatta.com celebration would continue as scheduled this weekend. As well as celebrating Zenyatta, the event also raises money for Thoroughbred Rehab Center Inc.
Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year, was famous in her days on the racetrack for her 17 consecutive victories in graded stakes events, including 13 grade one races, which inspired a legion of devoted fans the world over. She was retired in 2010.
