British eventing horse Orto has been euthanised after an injury sustained on the cross-country of the Burghley Horse Trials on Saturday.

Ridden by Sara Squires, Orto hit his right stifle whilst jumping fence 19, the Rolex combination. Orto and Squires did not fall at the jump.

Orto was taken to a veterinary hospital where he was given a thorough examination including radiography by a team of veterinary surgeons employed by Burghley Horse Trials.

After this, the decision was made to euthanize Orto on welfare grounds.

By the holsteiner sire Maximillian Saluut, Orto was owned by Nick and Jackie Budd. He was 13 years old.

Four other combinations incurred penalties at fence 19.
