New sidesaddle high jump record set

A Irish sidesaddle rider has jumped a 6’8″ wall, beating the previous world record by 2 inches.

sidesaddle-puissanceSusan Oakes and the stallion SIEC Atlas cleared the 2.03m puissance wall sidesaddle, at Ireland’s new National Sports Campus in Blanchardstown, last Thursday.

She then rode another horse, SIEC Oberon, over a 6’5″ triple bar, to break that record, too.

It was reported in the media that the jumps were witnessed by an FEI official and the World Record Academy, but the World Record Academy said they were not present.

A spokesman said: “Anybody trying to set a new record must obtain written permission (and our rules, etc) first. We did not approve this attempt.”

From a hunting background, Oakes started showjumping only 17 months ago, when she decided to have a tilt at the sidesaddle high jump world record.

In July last year she set a world record when she cleared 5’9″ on Brandy and Red at Aintree’s National Show.
