Veterinarians: Coming to a theater near you

American moviegoers settling into theatres to watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters this week are being given a few insights into the veterinary profession.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has released a 30-second advertisement in theaters in select cities across the US to promote veterinary medicine during its 150th anniversary celebrations.

It is targeted at movie theaters in seven cities and is expected to be seen by 3.2 million people.

The advertisement will play before movie previews during the pre-trailer advertisements, in 160 theaters and 2760 screens across the United States in the Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, and Washington DC markets.

Movies that will include the ad before the feature screening include Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University, the sequel to the smash hit Monsters Inc., the blockbuster zombie film starring Brad Pitt, World War Z, and Man of Steel, This is the End, and Marvel’s Iron Man 3.

“The goal of the ad is to promote the veterinary profession to the public, and to highlight the many other things that veterinarians do beyond treating pet cats and dogs,” explains AVMA president Dr Douglas Aspros.

“We hope that this will help boost public awareness of the important role veterinarians fill in our society, and across the globe.”

The AVMA is celebrating its 150th anniversary with several programs, including an interactive Smithsonian Museum exhibit, sponsored by Zoetis, which will premier in Chicago at the AVMA Annual Convention, July 19–23, 2013.
