Aust powers through Sydney 3DE cross-country

Mike Etherington-Smith’s cross-country course has certainly changed the scoreboard of the Trans-Tasman Eventing Challenge in Sydney, with the Australian team opening up what looks like an unassailable lead, despite one member being eliminated.

The remaining three hold first, second and fourth positions with a team total of 151.3 penalties.

For the New Zealand team, Joe Waldron on Springvale All Black, Simon Gordon on, and Bryce Newman on Bates Trademark, hold fifth, sixth, and eighth place respectively, with a team total of 211.7 penalties. Donna Smith incurred 20 jumping penalties at two fences with Just Chocolate, incurring 54.4 time penalties in the process, so now has the discard score.

Nineteen of the 25 competitors completed the course, ten of them with clear rounds, but only Craig Barrett on Sandhills Brillaire was inside the time. Stuart Tinney was close with Pluto Mio, just 1 second over for 0.4 of a time penalty, and Joe Waldron rocketed up the scoreboard with All Black after adding only 1.6 time penalties. Stuart still holds the lead, with Craig second, Shane Rose third on Virgil having added 4 time penalties, and Natalie Blundell fourth having had 7.2 time penalties with Algebra.

Donna had 20 jumping penalties and 16.8 time penalties with her individual horse, Balmoral Tangolooma, and lies ninth, while Dannie Lodder and Moochi, also riding as individuals, had 20 jump and 18 time to be 13th overnight.
