A horse suffered fatal injuries and two men were taken to hospital following a collision between an Amish buggy and a car in New York state.

The accident happened in Heuvelton, on Route 184, about 5.30pm on Thursday.

Two men – the buggy driver and car driver – were taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center for evaluation.

The car was being driven west, in the same direction as the buggy, when the accident occurred, according to authorities.

The buggy was destroyed in the impact and the horse had to be euthanized because of its injuries.

I drive through through this area several times a year and it astounds me that these buggies and carriages are NOT required to have lights or even a reflective triangle on the back. I have driven down these curvy, rainy, wet roads in upper NY state and come upon these buggies suddenly, they are very difficult to see, so it is not surprising, although unfortunate, this accident happened (it is not the first, by the way). I can’t believe there isn’t a state law requiring safety lights and safety reflectors, this is the 21st century, even if the Amish live like it is not. Also, most of the horses I have seen are lame.
