Big guns out for Osberton horse trials

Several London 2012 Olympians and international riders are expected at next week’s Osberton International Horse Trials, which also hosts the Lycetts Young Horse Championships.

The event, on the property of Michael Foljambe at Osberton Park, near Worksop, Nottinghamshire, starts on Wednesday, Septermber 26 and runs to Sunday.

London Olympic British silver medalists Tina Cook and Nicola Wilson will be competing, joined by fellow top Brits Piggy French, Oliver Townend and the reigning Rolex Grand Slam winner Pippa Funnell.

International riders also add to the exciting melting pot including New Zealand’s Mark Todd, Irish team regular Mark Kyle plus Sweden’s Olympic first-timer Ludwig Svennerstal, with more to be confirmed.

The British Eventing Young Horse Championships, sponsored by Lycetts have been taking place since 2003, this being the third year at Osberton Park. Past British Eventing Young Horse Champions include Borough Pennyz who was the highest placed mare at the London 2012 Olympic Games with Italian rider, Vittoria Panizzon.

This year, two embryo transfer progeny of Lucinda Fredericks’ famous mare Headley Brittania will contest the Four Year Old section with Lucinda.

There are also in-hand classes for mares and foals, and young horses up to the age of three at Osberton.

Irish Jester competing three-star (Sarah Cohen), Blenheim 2011

5 year old
Opposition Heracles – stallion competing Advanced with Kirsty Johnson
Lead the Way – prolific four-star horse for owner/rider Clea Phillips. The gelding sadly died this year at Bramham. Previously the combination had had three top ten placings at Burghley.

6 year old
Woodlands Unique Comet – competed to three-star with Sacha Hourigan
Nullabor – sixth at Burghley in 2007 with Clayton Fredericks
Nordic Gent – currently competing OI with Tyler Cassells
Peaceful Consort – competed three-star with Andrew Hoy in 2010

4 year old
Up With The Lark – stallion competed to advanced with Michael Jackson now at stud in Yorkshire
4th Trebetherick – ridden by Sarah Cohen and completed Badminton in 2010; now retired as broodmare

Coolgrange Merger – ridden by full time Vet Tony Warr to Badminton (completed) and also this year at Blenheim.

Skylight – competed 2008 Young Rider squad in Kreuth 14th (Georgie Spence) and fifth Bramham U25. Currently still competing U-18 level with Amelia Walker
