A 10-year-old girl has died after  a barrel-racing accident in Vernal, Utah.

Her name has yet to be released.

She was racing at the Western Park arena on Tuesday when her horse hit a pole at the end of the arena, knocking her off the animal, according to police.

The victim received immediate emergency medical attention at the scene and was taken by ambulance to the Ashley Regional Medical Center.

She was then flown to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake, where she died the following day.

It’s a tragic day in the barrell racing world. Often times we forget how dangerous our sport actually is. When we lose someone in an accident it’s always a tragedy especially when it involves a child. My heart goes out to the family and the community.

It would be great if all gymkhana-type and Western-related riding encouraged the use of helmets. I don’t know the specifics of this particular incident, but as a teenager I lost a friend to a head injury during a gymkhana show that possibly could have been prevented by wearing a helmet. You only get one brain. Please encourage riders, especially young riders, to wear helmets!
