The cancelled 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships have been rescheduled to run alongside the Badminton Horse Trials next year.

Badminton organisers have worked closely with British Eventing and long standing sponsors Mitsubishi Motors to reschedule the competition at the venue which has become synonymous with the Grassroots Championships for many riders. The 2012 Championships were cancelled because of adverse weather conditions which left the ground at Badminton waterlogged and partially flooded.

“At Badminton we are delighted to double up on our Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships in 2013 after the enormous disappointment of the 2012 cancellation. This solution will mean that no riders are denied the chance of taking part in an event at this iconic venue. We look forward to welcoming everyone next year” said Hugh Thomas, Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials Event Director.

The rescheduled Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships will be hosted as a separate class alongside the 2013 Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships and all of those combinations who were eligible for the 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Grassroots Championships will remain eligible until the Championships are held in 2013. Riders eligible for the 2012 Championships that go on to qualify the same horse for the 2013 Championships will only be able to compete in one class under BE rules.

British Eventing Chief Executive Mike Etherington-Smith said: “This is fantastic news for all involved and we recognise the hard work and effort that has been put in by Badminton Horse Trials and Mitsubishi Motors UK to help make this happen.”

Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, sponsors of the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials added: “We are pleased and excited that this solution has been reached. The Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships aim to encourage, develop and reward keen event riders and a major part of that is the opportunity to ride at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. It’s not even just about riding at Badminton as a venue, but about the event itself. That’s why the finals could not be replicated anywhere else or at any other time than when the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials is taking place.”

All those who were due to compete in the 2012 Championships will be contacted by British Eventing in the near future.
