Canada’s Greater Vancouver Zoo welcomed a 70-pound male zebra foal last Thursday.
His mother, Sahara, delivered her first foal without assistance. It was also the first foal for his sire, Sierra.
Zoo officials said Sahara wanted to nurse but the new arrival was unsure how to receive the milk.
Staff had undertaken regular bottle feedings every few hours while the maternal bond was established.
The young colt stands about three feet tall.
The mother and baby were to remain in the nursery area for a few days, while being monitored.
On the same day, Squirrel Monkey MJ delivered a new baby and then the next day mother Squirrel Monkey, Shyllo, welcomed a new baby as well. Both mothers and babies are doing well.
In the zoo’s North American section, Muskox mums Fluffy and Maisie both delivered healthy calves.
