A 75-year-old man stands accused of shooting dead six of his neighbor’s horses that are believed to have wandered on to his property in upstate New York.
Lauren L. McMaster has been charged over the deaths of the horses at New Berlin, in Chenango County, 80 kilometres southeast of Syracuse.
McMaster was arrested on Sunday and charged with six counts of second-degree criminal mischief and six counts of cruelty to animals. It is understood the horses died on Saturday and authorities believe a shotgun was used.
Police told local media there had been a long-standing dispute between McMaster and a neighbor over wandering stock.
Police believe the six animals wandered on to McMaster’s property. Two returned with injuries that were ultimately to prove fatal. The other four animals were later found dead on McMaster’s property.
McMaster has been bailed.
