A “Herald on Sunday” investigation has found anecdotal evidence of a growing number of thoroughbreds being sent to slaughter at a South Island plant that exports meat to Europe.
One transport operator told the newspaper he had transported more thoroughbreds to Clover Meats in Gore in the last three months than he had done in three years.
Another said thoroughbreds used to be in the minority, “but the ‘giveaways’ on thoroughbreds in the last three to six months is staggering. It’s made me wonder what’s going on”.
The recession is considered a factor.
