US Show Jumping Chef d’Equipe George Morris is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer this spring.
The legendary trainer will remain in his position as Chef d’Equipe and will stay closely involved with the program, the selection process and the riders even though he will be unable to travel to the Observation Events.
Morris, 74, has asked Robert Ridland, who was recently named Morris’s successor from 2013, to attend the Observation Events and monitor the technical aspects of those competitions and report to Morris.
Morris, who won team jumping silver at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, is to retire in 2013 after six years in the role.
Morris is expected to be fit and able to return to the show circuit by early summer and is expected to be able to travel in time to prepare the team in Europe for the Olympic Games and attend that Championship.
The four USEF Observation Events are:
The Del Mar National Horse Show, California, May 1-6
Kentucky Spring Horse Show, Lexington, May 8-13
The Devon Horse Show, Pennsylvania, May 29-June 2
Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Canada, June 13-17
