US eventer Willpower dies on cross-country

US eventing horse Willpower collapsed and died on the cross-country at the Spring Horse Trials at the Ark in Monroe, North Carolina, at the weekend.

Ridden by Maggie Hitron, the 17-year-old Thoroughbred gelding collapsed after suffering an aortic aneurism before jumping the 18th fence during the cross-country phase on Saturday, March 31. A full necropsy will be performed.

Willpower was owned by Maggie Hitron, 23, and her father, John.

Hitron was not injured in the fall.
