A fire in a Florida barn has claimed nine thoroughbred horses.
The fire at McKathan Farm and Training Center,in Reddick, broke out mid-morning on Sunday.
Firefighters from Marion County Fire Rescue were at the scene nine minutes after the 10.31am call, by which time three-quarters of the barn was ablaze.
The fire was brought under control in less than 40 minutes.
Farm workers and a neighbour managed to lead eight horses to safety, but the last three suffered burns.
In all, nine horses are reported to have perished in the blaze.
Ocala.com reported that all of the dead and injured thoroughbred horses belonged to the farm’s owners, James and Jocelyn McKathan.
The Fire Marshal’s Office is working to establish the cause.
