A new trend for the fashionable equestrian

I’m back, darlings!

I shall start off my endeavors for 2011 with the news that we equestrians, are, after all, quite fashionable!

Apparently bicycles are becoming rather popular in New York (aka The Big Apple) for various reasons, and riders have been crying out for cool-looking bike helmets.

NBC New York Blogger Laura Neilson has leapt on the bandwagon and suggested cool cyclists might consider a horse riding helmet: “Whether you’re wearing a flirty floral dress and thick tights, or jeans and tall boots, what better way to channel your inner blue-blood than with a winsome, equestrian-chic topper?”

Cool or no – a nice velvet helmet with a stylie pullover such as the little number pictured at left and discussed here by Style.com’s Maya Singer would suit yours truly down to the ground.

I imagine this will start an entirely new trend in the showring … and we all know the showies are at the cusp of equestrian fashion!

On a more sombre note, it would appear that cyclists are getting with the programme, too, and realising that helmets can save one from a nasty head injury. Maya Singer has told trendy fashion photographers: “To you street-style bloggers who love to photograph girls on bikes: For crying out loud, starting photographing them in helmets, before you initiate a trend of major brain injuries.”

Here, here.

And in case you missed it last week, in the horse world helmet rules ARE going to change.

About time.
