US event horse Chummin collapsed and died between fences on the cross-country of the Galway Downs International Three Day Event in Temecula, California, over the weekend.

Owned and ridden by Lisa Peecook, seven-year-old Chummin collapsed during the CCI one-star event between fences 15 and 16. Organisers say there was a full paramedic and veterinary team present within moments of the collapse.

“There was no indication of distress prior to the incident. There will be a necropsy performed on Chummin,” organisers said.

Reports indicate that Peecook was pulling the horse up after feeling something was wrong, when he collapsed.

Peecook was checked by medical personnel on site and was released.

Chummin, a thoroughbred gelding by Formal Gold, won at Twin Rivers in April, and in his past four starts had placed second twice, and fifth and sixth.
