The Selle Français in New Zealand

July 15, 2009

History of the Selle Français

Lindberg Des Hayettes
There is now quite an impressive line up of horses competing with the SF suffix. It is also interesting to note the very strong influence of Alme in the pedigrees of all these stallions.

The first stallion in New Zealand is Valiant SF – by the famous Galoubet SF (Alme) with a fully thoroughbred dam line. Valiant SF has produced recent stars of showjumping – Kahurangi Tardak, Kahurangi Valentino, Kahurangi Vin Rouge and Alaric.

Next comes the soon to be approved Lindberg Des Hayettes (Papillon Rouge/Jalisco B/Alme from an Aiglon Rouge dam line) - himself a Grand Prix star in Canada before returning to New Zealand to be ridden by Samantha McIntosh at HOY 2009.

Owner Steve Cohen of LC Horse Farm has progeny of Lindberg Des Hayettes and Telegraph of various ages that are available for sale. Steve says he uses principally thoroughbred mares and also has an imported Anglo Arab from France who has produced two beautiful foals each from both Telegraph and Lindberg. Frozen semen from Lindberg Des Hayettes and Telegraph is available from LC horse Farm and Equibreed.

NZ Performance Horses have used a selection of frozen semen from France, including:

  • Fetiche du Pas (Le Tot de Semilly/Alme)
  • Cabdula du Tillard (Abdullah (Trak)/Galoubet A)
  • Rox de la Touche (Lord Gordon/Alme)
  • Barbarian (Quiniou/Galoubet A/Alme)
  • Funny Star – out of a Bouton d'or mare.

Cabdula du Tillard
Cabdula du Tillard is the sire of the World Cup winner Muskateer NZPH and 6 year old breeding series horse Peptalk NZPH. Fetiche du Pas is represented by Online NZPH and Operetta NZPH in the age group leaderboards. Rox de la Touche is represented by Ocean Beach. Barbarian has Optional NZPH, Photogenic NZPH and Paris Jewel NZPH. Funny Star has Playday NZPH, Playtime NZPH and Quorum NZPH.

IQ, one of the top mares of the current Equibreed series is by BT (competes as Knock Wood in US). BT is by Olisco, a Selle Francais stallion who Michael Matz and Michael Dormund rode in America. He was out of a thoroughbred mare, Cool Twist, who was a full sister to Gem Twist, Greg Best's Olympic Silver Medal mount.
