JK Holsteiner Stud
By June Marsden & Keith Atkinson, June 2002
The JK Holsteiner Stud was started in New Zealand in 1988 by Keith Atkinson and June Marsden with the importation of the Holsteiner Stallions JK Lucus, JK Sacremento from Australia plus two females of appropriate Holsteiner breeding for us to start our breeding establishment.
We had a firm goal right from the onset to become performance horse breeders, although we took services to both these stallions in our first years it became abundantly clear to us that this was not what we wanted to do as we wanted to breed a type of horse.
The type of horse we wanted was attractive, intelligent and fast learning, which stood above the ground with a longer leg, short coupled, good shoulder and top line with powerful hock action.
Most importantly that all movements were uphill.
We are firm believers in the herd breeding concept with little interference from humans whilst the horses are very young.
To this end we prefer to handle and break-in our horses between three to five years of age. Our “Total Breeding Concept ” is used as a discussion paper at the Zuric University in Switzerland.
After breeding this way for many years we are totally committed to this breeding method. The only way to achieve this was to close the stud to all but the occasional service so we could attain the goals we had set for ourselves, which was to produce top performing dressage horses that have a particular look about them, this we have achieved.
To continue breeding without out-crossing, it was important for us to import other suitable Holsteiner Stallions with complimentary breeding lines.
From these Stallions we concentrated on breeding broodmares to be put back to J.K. Sacramento and J.K Lucas.
These imported Stallions were Romedio (now deceased), J.K. Reynard and J.K. Rodin.
We also had a homebred Stallion J.K. Mazurati which we bred out of our imported high studbook Holsteiner mare Mazurka.
We have also bought in frozen semen from Germany in the early days before it became fashionable to do so.
With all these Stallions on the stud, our main breeding concentrates on J.K. Lucas and J.K. Sacramento.
It is obvious by all the dressage results, that the J.K. horses have won so many classes, that it would be impossible to mention them all individually, so we have listed only a few, plus we have horses exported to Asia and America.
For years to come we will have more exciting horses being bred due to our established breeding criteria.
The proof of our breeding ideals are now growing up on our new farm in Takapau – Hawkes Bay.
This new wave of J.K. Holsteiner’s is headed by a very exciting three year old colt, J.K. Latano destined for a performance/breeding Stallion, the epitome of our desired breeding.
Visitors have mentioned that he is the most exciting horse they have ever seen in New Zealand.
J.K. Latano is sired by J.K. Lucas out of a J.K. Sacramento mare.
