NZ Warmbloods

HAHNDORF

Hahndorf was bred and stands at Charlton Stud. He is by Winnebago out of Ikebana (TB) by Castle Donnington. He is black, 16hh.born on May 10 th . 1978, which makes him 24 this May.

Hahndorf has a fabulous temperament and very powerful paces.

Hahndorf was one of the first foals in New Zealand by Winnebago as he served a few mares in the autumn when he first arrived and he is the only stallion in New Zealand by Winnebago.

Mum and I both liked his type and were keen to put a bit more movement into the eventers we were breeding and breeding him to Thoroughbred mares we were going to have ¾ bred horses that could gallop as well as move. But he had to prove himself before he was going to be used at stud.

Myself and sister Lynley both rode him and he proved himself in all disciplines.

He was Prix-St. –George level in dressage, Intermediate eventing, and the odd “C “ grade in Showjumping doing 1.20 – 30 courses. His excellent temperament allowed him to participate in all disciplines. We began using him at stud as a six year old. Because nobody rode stallions there were no facilities for them at shows.

Our truck was built in such a way that all the partitions came out and we could stable Hahndorf in it. At a jumping show at Whakatane Lynley had Hahndorf in the truck at night and our cousin Megan had her pony on a tether on the side of the truck and the girls both slept in the luton. Hahndorf would be happy until morning and time for his breakfast. Then he would start licking Lynley’s face to wake her up to get his feed.

Over 11 years he has left some good horses and many have won New Zealand Championships.

Charlton Clem, one of his eldest, won a 3.D.E. and then turned into a dressage horse and was ready to go Grand Prix but unsoundness stopped him from competing.

Charlton Encore won the N.Z. One-Day Championships and went on to Advanced eventing before being sold overseas.

Mulberry Walk was an Advanced Eventer at 4 star level.

Honest Tom was advanced and won Puhinui 2 star, before being sold to U.S.A. where he is still winning.

Hahndorf has left dressage horses Charlton Fingerprint, Charlton Design, - both N.Z. champions.

It was nice to see, on a recent judging trip to the South East Asian Games, a mare by Hahndorf in the final of the showjumping.

Now in his twilight years he is still fit and well and fertile. It will be interesting to see his mares being bred from and keeping his line going.
