Limonit
We are delighted to announce the purchase, direct from the Hanoverian State Stud in Germany, of Limonit.
Limonit is a 16.2hh Bay Stallion by Lancier out of Weltnote. Lancier is by the fabulous Lauries Crusader xx out of Wenderkrone (by Wenderkris), while the dam line is represented by Weltnote (by Weltdale, a son of Weltmeyer) and out of St.Pr St. Stina.
Limonit brings to New Zealand exciting and modern bloodlines. He is the first son of Lancier to stand at the Hanoverian State Stud. He has probably the best performance test results of any of the licensed Hanoverian stallions in New Zealand. Third overall in the performance test with a score of 130.1, he was third in the dressage (score 135.1) and 13th in the jumping (112.73).
His rideability deserves special attention. He gained a 9 in his performance test for his willingness to perform. He is striking with a big frame and expressive correct conformation. Currently a member of the Celle quadrille, he will be seen out and about competing in New Zealand although Stud duties will take priority.
Currently in quarantine, Limonit will be in New Zealand in early October and will commence duties immediately. While he will miss the Stallion parade there will be an open day for those that wish to view.

Flute carries some of the best and proven bloodlines that can be found within the breed. His sire Caprimond was champion of his 100 day test and he has been awarded the title of elite stallion for his outstanding contribution to the Trakehner breed. He has been the stallion with the highest index for rideability and type in the Hanoverian stud book since 1999! and is looking set to be the new Abglanz.
Caprimond's son Hohenstein, who is a fully licensed Trakehner and an elite stallion, has sired numerous top quality progeny which fetch high auction prices not only within the Trakehner breed but other breed societies as well. He sired the Hanoverian stallions Harvard, Hudson and most famously the 2002 champion Hanoverian stallion His Highness.
The judges described him as the most outstanding and extravagant champion that Hanover has ever seen. He sold for 515,000 euros to the president of the AHS and is currently still in Germany, where he won his 30 and 70 day tests in 2003. In his first breeding season he covered 500 mares! Holme Park Flute’s dam was champion as a foal at the annual Trakehner show and best British-bred Trakehner -she also produced the 1999 champion foal by Prokofiev and an advanced medium mare by Marduc who was bred by the UK celebrity chef Aldo Zilli.
Holme Park Flute was purchased as a foal by Sacha Rowson as a stallion prospect in 1999. He was then produced and presented by Jenny Loriston-Clarke at the annual British Warmblood Society stallion grading, where he gained licensed status with very high marks. In the UK he qualified for the regional and national dressage championships, but was then exported to New Zealand.
Flute left behind quality progeny from warmblood and T.B mares which have won many championships in the youngstock ring, with news this year of them winning the progeny group class at the prestigious Royal Cornwall Show, England. His oldest progeny, now four years old, are broken and all proving to possess Flute’s wonderful attributes.
Since his arrival in New Zealand Flute has had a few competitive outings with outstanding results:
Supreme Champion Sports Horse at the Hawkes Bay A&P show 2004
Grand Champion Warmblood, Overall Champion stallion and Supreme
Exhibit at the North Island All Breeds in-hand show 2005.
In the dressage arena Flute has had several wins at Novice and Elementary
level with scores always in the 70s.
Flute is now in training and will be competed by the top trainer and rider
Fiona Craig.

It’s that exciting time of year again and this season at Astek Stud we are expecting quite a variety of foals.
The second crop of foals are due around the country by our young Hanoverian Kinnordy Gym Bello (currently a licensed stallion with Studbook Kinnordy and pending classification and licensing with the NZWHA). Gym Bello (by Gymnastik Star out of a Graf Landau mare) has proven to cross beautifully with both Thoroughbred and Warmblood mares to produce very attractive, modern types with beautiful heads, kind, intelligent temperaments, uphill conformation and floaty movement. With his multiple world champion showjumping bloodlines, combined with elevated movement and high trainability, Gym Bello offers great versatility for dressage, showjumping or eventing - a quality that his foals have all inherited.
Magnificent Holsteiner sire Ramirez (by Ramiro Z) has some of his older progeny now starting to compete, displaying promising movement and plenty of natural talent for jumping with keen attitude. In March we presented Ramirez to the visiting Holsteiner Association classifiers including Herr Norbert Boley from the Holsteiner Verband. They were impressed with Ramirez’s presence, temperament and pedigree, and are going to finalise his classification by inspecting progeny during their next tour. We are really looking forward to our first Astek foals by Ramirez due from October onwards.
We also have two exciting foals due by the Hanoverian Gymnastik Star who is definitely the hot name around Australasia for his outstanding, highly versatile progeny.
It is great to see some well bred new stallions arriving around the country, and also the arrival of imported mares and increased general awareness of mare influence on the foal. Mare quality is what we believe is really essential now for New Zealand breeders to focus on, to continue the competitiveness of the NZ sport horse in the international arena. Unlike a stallion who can breed 100 or so foals a year, a mare can only produce 1, so the significance of her input is of the utmost importance. There are likely to be a fair number of foals around by any one stallion, so we believe as breeders the easiest way to stand out is in our mare quality - it really does show EVERY time!
Wishing everyone well with the coming breeding season and summer competitions.
Sue and Diana Fowler, Astek Stud
In 1991 the first Hanoverian Stallion DYNAMIT was imported. He left fantastic
performing horses and died far too early in 1998.
Breeding is thinking in generations rather than the ‘one off ’ type where one never makes real progress. Having this in mind the second stallion
WORLDWIDE P.B. had arrived at Vollrath in January 1998. We now had the
chance to breed and improve on Dynamit lines. The Worldwide-Dynamit and
Genius offspring at Vollrath are fortunately fillies of which WILDFLOWER will
be bred this year to LESSING the latest arrival as a two year old in December
2004.
This is extremely exciting as we at Vollrath are in a position now to breed
Hanoverian bloodlines with stallions actually standing in NZ pasture and
performing in National competitions. Stallions are in our view mostly riding
horses and are used seasonally to share their genes with compatible mares.
The future of the purpose-bred sport/dressage horse is in our opinion secured
at Vollrath.
The success of our stallions’ bloodlines is a simple fact:
Now that proves confidence in bloodlines which we share with the German Verband and it is most likely that we in New Zealand will produce Sport Horses, in particular for the Dressage arena, which will not have to hide behind “Frozen Semen”.

Testimal from Di McCrostie, NZEF Level 1 Dressage Coach:
“I have recently helped in the Dressage training of two mares bred by Annabelle. I have found them to have very nice paces and conformation, and they are both clever, kind mares, with very trainable temperaments and a good attitude to their work.
I am now looking forward to visiting Caithness Stud, to view the stallions, mares and youngstock, bred by the Read Family.”

Davidoff incorporates the image of the German sport pony beautifully with a strong, yet elegant body, three balanced bold paces and strong nerves. He comes from a family of royalty in dressage and showjumping pony circles. In the first five generations of his pedigree all males are either winners or reserve winners in the stallion licensation, which translates into high quality breeding animals that were considered as the best breeding prospects of their year.
The females in his family are no less inspiring: two state premium mares, his grand dam and great grand dam (Nadin and Suleika), are described in several books as the best pony broodmares Germany has ever seen.
As many warmblood riders are very involved in dressage, the young riders are following their lead and compete in dressage tests on ponies. What sounds “cute” is actually big business internationally nowadays.
The ponies in the international dressage tests are bred in the image of their bigger brother warmblood and if you didn’t see them standing next to the arena fence, you wouldn’t even know that they are only between 14 and 14.2hh high.
The goal behind breeding this capable smaller type of horse is to prepare the new generation of Olympic and World Champions from amongst the teenagers of today. Presenting their ponies internationally with all the pressures and high level of skill prepares young people for their later role when they switch to a hack and compete against senior riders. Without the experience it will be hard to go to the top. Many former Pony European Champions have gone to become adult European and World Champions on hacks.
Davidoff’s sire, Dressman, is well known for his enormous successes in international championships and doesn't need much introduction. He started off as a young stallion and constantly produced the highest results. He topped the stallion licensation, the stallion performance test, the German Bundes championships, the German Championship and the European Championships. His sweetest success was the double European championship gold two years ago.
Now, getting on in age, he’s left the stage and lets his offspring have a chance. In several European Championships he was competing against his own sons and daughters. In the 2001 European Championships in Sweden, for example, Dressman won the team gold while his daughter Daphne (competing for the United Kingdom) was receiving the silver.
Father and daughter successes are not rare in Davidoff’s breeding: early breeders in Europe will remember Nadir and Napoli, two jet black ponies, who had the European dressage circles under their full control for several years in the eighties. They are closely related to Davidoff’s dam, Mona.
Breeders who own a Davidoff foal often come back to the stud for a second and even a third one.

The new season is now underway. At Starlight Farm broodmares waddle about the paddock with huge bellies containing the promise of exciting offspring only a matter of a month or two away. With the quality of Damontez’s offspring last year I await with eager anticipation this year’s little surprises. The rising 5 year old Damontez has proven himself to be a pleasure to own and ride. Damontez is an absolute gentleman who loves every bit of female love and attention and yet is a serious horse for competition. He is destined to be another successful Distelfink grandson and, I believe, a successful sire in his own right. Much of his progeny thus far are out of quality thoroughbred mares which have produced attractive tall powerful scopey foals by Damontez and will be well suited to the future demands of Eventing and Show Jumping. You only have to look at recent articles in the Horse and Pony magazine to realise the absolute importance and success Distelfink has had on sport horses in this country.
Every day Damontez improves under saddle. With his laid back nature and a sucker for affection, he likes to please and continues to show tremendous scope and eagerness over a fence. I have come back from a recent trip to Germany with a new found respect for breeding quality sport horses and am inspired to work with New Zealand Warmblood breeders to develop our horses in this country to the incredible standard that is set overseas. Good luck to all those breeders out there and I look forward to meeting and catching up with many of you in the coming season.

Senator VDL and Pico Bello
Senator VDL’s sire, Corland (Keur) has had an impressive career in International Show Jumping under Wout-Jan van der Schans. Corland’s dam line is one of the best in Holstein. Corland himself is a credit to his background in every way, already having produced 3 licensed sons.
With his first two crops of foals on the ground, Senator VDL is stamping his progeny not only with his outstanding temperament, but is also leaving foals with correct conformation, lovely heads and a strong topline and hindquarters.
Senator VDL had a very successful competition season in 2004/05 with his major achievements as follows:
Due to a decision made by the NZEF, Senator VDL will have to compete as a 7yr old this season. We know that he will rise to the challenge and look forward to an exciting 2005/06 competition season. Once again, he will be ridden by Ike Unsworth.
Pico Bello’s sire, Calvados is bred from the best of French performance stock. The sire of Calvados, Uriel produced more than 100 International show jumping horses. The dam of Calvados, Gold Rose was a member of the French SJ Team and won many notable Grand Prix. Pico Bello’s dam, Zellie is by Joost, the Holsteiner stallion that is one of the founders of Dutch show jumping breeding. In combination with Abgar, as seen in Pico Bello’s breeding, Joost has produced a large number of International Show Jumping horses.
Pico Bello has wonderful conformation with a very attractive head. He is powerful and athletic which provides him with the mechanics to perform with elevated, correct movement and a superb jumping technique.
Pico Bello performed extremely successfully under the guidance of Mark Brooks last season with some outstanding results:
Mark will continue to ride Pico Bello for the 2005/06 season in the Grand Prix Series.
At the Athens Olympics the gold medal in the showjumping went to Waterford Crystal who is by Landgraf, Landioso’s sire. The bronze medal winning horse was Royal Kaliber by Ramiro Z, the sire of Ramazotti. So not only do these stallions have very well proven bloodlines for showjumping, but they also have the blood of the best horses of modern time!
Landioso is a Holsteiner stallion who was 100 day performance tested and approved in the South of Germany. He stood for many years at Gestut Birkhoff in Baden-Wurtemburg and left a legacy of great progeny behind him when he made the move down under. Landioso is best known as a Grand Prix dressage stallion who has won many classes both here and in Europe. But as his bloodlines (Landgraf / Calvados II / Farnese) suggest, his progeny are equally at home over fences.
Ramazotti is a KWPN stallion from Holland, and was 100 day tested with the ZfdP in Germany. His bloodlines (Ramiro Z / Joost / Abgar) are also very famous for jumping, and although he possesses a huge jump, he was directed into a successful dressage career before injury left him unable to compete.
Karioi Studmaster Jody Hartstone believes that these two stallions will provide breeders with a great opportunity to breed foals who may well excel in one, two or even all three Olympic disciplines. “Jumping bred horses often make world class dressage horses (eg Corlandus the World Champion dressage horse was by Cor de la Bryere; the lovely Loutano is by Landgraf; Grand Prix dressage stars Rio Negro and Rampal are sired by Ramiro Z) but horses bred with exclusively dressage bloodlines seldom will go to the top in jumping.”
This is one of the breeding aims of Karioi – to breed horses with the conformation, trainability, and pedigree to go to the highest level of the discipline they show the most talent in. The broodmare band at the stud also reflects this aim - with mares by Jaguar, Valiant, Argus (KWPN), Gruenhorn du Trichon and Wesserwolf – all adding their own bloodlines and talent to the mix.
This season sees the arrival of Landioso’s 2nd crop of NZ foals, with the first crop producing in hand winners at both the Horse of the Year show and the North Island All Breeds show. Ramazotti is about to have his very first New Zealand foals. It’s a very exciting time indeed…
Moschinno is a New Zealand bred sport horse, by Swedish sire, GILBRALTAR II, and Swedish mare INDIA II (who was imported in utero from America).
INDIA’s sire, SILVAN, and Grand Sire, WARRIGALL, are former high-level dressage horses. WARRIGALL competed and won Grand Prix dressage events in Sweden. Moschinno's sire, GIBRALTAR II, was Horse of the Year in 1997.
Moschinno completed his in-hand career when he was judged Sport Horse of the Year at the 2001 Horse of the Year Show, Hastings. Six months earlier Moschinno was chosen as the EFS Senior Champion at the NZ Warmblood Association’s, “Stars of the Future” show at Ti Papa in Auckland.
At these two outings, Moschinno was chosen over and above any other warmblood breed, by two highly acclaimed German Judges, Harry Boldt and Manfred Lopp, as being fully deserving of these two titles.
Swedish warmbloods are noted for their athleticism, their ride-ability and their temperament. Heritage is obviously all-important in passing on these characteristics. Moschinno is very strong on both sides of his pedigree. There are a number of Swedish Stallions regarded as having huge beneficial influence in breeding stars. Moschinno has URBINO, CALLAGHAN and GASPARI on his sire’s side. CEYLON and SILVAN are on his dam’s side. GASPARI was the Grandsire of the wonderful GAUGIN DE LULLY.
CEYLON was classified as an elite Stallion in Sweden. Amongst the progeny he produced were four sons who became approved stallions in their own right. One was MASTER, Kyra Kurkland’s dressage star. MASTER is recognised as being one of the great dressage stallions, winning 19 FEI events in 19 starts.
SILVAN was another son. SILVAN started competing in Europe as a show jumper and won a number of European Championships at the 1.40 metre level of competition. Injury forced his early retirement. SILVAN was then exported to the USA where he started a career in dressage. He reached Intermediare Level I where again, injury curtailed his career. SILVAN sired approximately 26 foals in North America, of whom the mares were much sought after for breeding. One of these mares was INDIA II, Moschinno’s Dam.
CALLAGHAN is Moschinno’s Grandsire and the son of URBINO. CALLAGHAN has produced a number of quality horses in Sweden and the USA, in dressage, show jumping and eventing. One of the better known USA-bred Stallions is LEGACY, who received amongst the highest grades possible at his stallion classification. LEGACY is also a full brother to New Zealand’s LOHENGRIN.
Moschinno is currently standing at Manuka Sport Horses in Karaka, South Auckland. He is continuing with his dressage schooling and is working well. He has only recently discovered show-jumping and has a natural ability that has surprised us all. He is very honest and is a pleasure to handle both at home and while out competing at shows.
Moschinno’s progeny are just now starting to become available. Our own first foal, MANUKA SWEDISH ROSE, has recently been started under saddle. She is a 16:2hh, 4 year old mare, who has already been successful in her own in-hand career, winning RESERVE CHAMPION SPORT HORSE at the Royal Easter Show, 2002 as a yearling. Her temperament is impeccable; her paces are all naturally free, elevated and rhythmical. A testament to her breeding.
We also presently have two more Moschinno progeny, MENTION MY NAME (SWB/TBX) and also MAD ABOUT ME (SWB/TBX) which have also been shown successfully in-hand and will be ready to be started in the 2006 season.
Manuka Sport Horses is also proud to announce that we have recently acquired MIRANDA. MIRANDA is a 5 year old New Zealand-bred pure Swedish Warmblood mare by LOHENGRIN out of MANIARA (who is the highest scoring classified Swedish Mare in history). Miranda stands 17hh and her conformation and paces are outstanding. Miranda will be bred to Moschinno this season and we expect the resulting progeny to be quite outstanding.
