Warmblood Horses at the FEI World Challenge 2006
November 2006
N Z Warmblood Assn. members and breeders had some considerable success with their horses at the recent event in Taupo.
Debbie Smith of Wanganui rates particular mention as the breeder of Avante Garde (Anamour/Dynamit/Distelfink) as winner of the Children's Challenge - ridden by Rebecca Goldsbury. Rebecca seems to have the ride on this horse while her sister is in Germany with Jaguar horse Julius (bred by Seattle Stud and taken to Grand Prix by Kallista Field).
Life Member Judith Wear also deserves mention as breeder of Winter Acacia (Anamour/Arctic Oak xx) - who did well in the warm up classes but was outscored by Debbie Barke's Mzungu and Penny Castle's Veritas (Voltaire II/Crown Law xx) in the final. Winter's Realm (Winterkeonig/Distelfink) and On the Ball (Loewenherz/Dream Dance xx) placed 4th and 5th.
James and Vanessa Hart bred the now consistent Grand Prix horse Kiteroa Kingston (Falkensee/ Auk xx) - owned and ridden by Joanna York, he won both the Inter II and Grand Prix B classes that were in addition to the Challenges.
Linda Hunt is responsible for the breeding of Abendstern (Anamour/Aberlou xx) - second in the Advanced class and ridden by another member Charmian Pearson-White. This class was won by a very consistent combination of Vanessa Way and KH Arvan (Anamour/Demure/Dynamit) He was bred by Karaka Hills Sporthorses in Oakura, Taranaki.
Demure was also at the show with her owner and rider Miriam Poot - also a member of the Assn. She came 6th in the Novice Challenge. The Novice class was won by the ever consistent Donnerheim (Donnerheist - rider Emma Malcolm - by of course - Donnerhall). This horse was imported from Australia as was another Donnerhall grandson, Delta Donnacasy, ridden by Lindsay Attwood for long time supporter Glenys Foote of Northland.

From the Horse of the Year Show
March 2006
Winner of the International Derby competition was Gordon (Voltaire II) ridden by Matthew Grayling. This combination set a cracking pace around the combination of show jumping and cross country fences, and jumped clear to take out the competition.
Horse of the Year went to Sacred Hill Answer Back ridden by Claire Murphy. Warmbloods in the line up were Damarusa (Lisa Coupe). This Distelfink mare set the competition alight being the first to go and thrilling the capacity crowd with a clear round. Damarusa finished 3rd. In 6th place was the Selle Francais stallion, Lindberg Des Hayettes, ridden by Katie McVean, in his first start at this level and in 7th place was Gospel (Jaguar) ridden by Robert Steele.
Jaguar has sadly been put down due to advanced age.
North Island All-Breeds In-hand Show
March 2006
The NIAB Show is held in Hamilton and for the past few years has been at the Waikato Event Centre. This is a good venue being a large flat grass area with big shade trees, which usually seem welcome.
It is well provided with stables and plenty of parking space. There are a few trade stalls to persuade you that you really do need "THAT" which looks so good and useful. There are In-hand classes for just about every breed of horse and pony you can think of, which, of course, includes Warmbloods.
There are Sporthorse and Turnout classes which are open to Warmblood horses and I think it would be great to see a Warmblood as Supreme Champion. It runs over Saturday and Sunday of a weekend early in January.

With all this in its favour it is surprising that the number of Warmblood entries has remained small.
This year prize money for Warmbloods was greatly increased, due to the generosity of an anonymous member. This was to help an attempt to increase the number of horses there.
It was only partially successful but those who were there enjoyed the day and gained publicity for their horses, even if they were not placed. We hope next year to see a really good number, even though it means getting into gear soon after Christmas.

World Cup Final
March 2006
Robert Steele and Gospel (Jaguar) were unfortunately not able to hold onto the early lead they established in the current World Cup series. This lovely horse, ably ridden by Robert, has jumped well all season but the final victory was not to be his on this occasion. Following the 5th round of the series held at Ti Papa at the end of January, Sue Thompson riding Air Hill the Rajah was the eventual winner, finishing on 55 points, followed by Maurice Beatson (My Golliwog) on 49 and Robert Steele (Gospel) on 46. There were 5 rounds in total with the top four rounds to count. The final of the World Cup will be held in Kuala Lumpur in April this year.
