Annual Warmblood Recognition Awards 2006

November, 2006

These awards are for members who have had success with their breeding or riding in the previous financial year and were decided at a recent Committee Meeting.

  • Sarah Milne - Hamilton

Sara is a Life Member of the Assn. who has had considerable breeding and riding successes over many years. In fact, I can think back to the early 80s when I recall her showing Writzmarc as a gangly two-year-old at one of our Hamilton youngstock shows.

Writzmarc (Witzbold/Vin's Gift xx) was bred by Sarah and her father Len Milne. He started his eventing career here with Sarah and was sold to a Dutch stable after which he represented Holland at the Barcelona Olympics in the Three Day Event Competition.

Sarah also purchased the Distelfink gelding Danzar and began his jumping and eventing career. She sold him to Olivia Bunn in Australia and whilst shortlisted for the Sydney Olympics he did not start. He DID win the event at Puhunui though which is no mean feat.

In recent times Sarah has bred her TB mare Hino xx (Drumochter) to produce three performance horses including Dice (sold overseas) Diversity - winner of the Showhunter of the Year Title and Double-O-Eight - winner of Showhunter of the Year AND the Young Event horse title.

Diversity has since gone on to produce Highly Recommended (by Brilliant Invader xx) He has won both the Showhunter of the Year and Young Event Horse titles as well. He is also a very accomplished Showjumping horse.

Sarah has had her formula pretty well right when one considers the above outstanding results.

  • Heike McLean - Kaiapoi

Heike has also had considerable success in riding and breeding over several years. Heike comes from Germany and is married to Christchurch vet Peter McLean. Peter was Studmaster for Falkensee during his South Island seasons. Heike rode the Falkensee mare Daniella to Advanced level and qualified for the FEI Challenge 2 years ago but was denied a start due to an injury to the mare.

She is currently riding a Falkensee gelding at elementary level.

Her main claim to fame this year has been breeder of Monique III - rider Angela Fergusson. Monique III is currently South Island Advanced Champion, Horse of the Year advanced title holder and runner up in the Horse of the Year freestyle final with 67.48%.

She was chosen to represent NZ in Sydney at the CDI in May at Prix St George level. She scored 60% in the Kur and finished 11th overall in a very strong field.

Heike is Vice President of the Association representing the South Island membership.

Congratulations to both winners. They are excellent examples of thoughtful, methodical horsewomen.

-Robin Potter

National Three-Day Champs in Taupo

June, 2006

Waitangi Laptop
The weather on Saturday could not have been better! Blue sky and not a breath of wind.

Judging for the National Young Event Horse Championship got underway at 9am. The numbers have grown each year and 2006 saw 36 horses entered in this class. The 4 and 5 year olds are judged over 4 sections:

  • dressage test (35%), judged by Joan Matheson,
  • jumping 8 fences at maximum 95cm (35%), judged by Vaughan Jeffferis,
  • gallop (10%) judged by Trudy Boyce, and
  • movement and conformation (20%), judged by Sarah Milne.
The horses were required to move from one phase to the next with no time allowed for change of gear. The judges were looking for an athletic, loose moving horse with a promising jumping technique, which, with correct training, should make a good three-day eventer.

And the winner ... Waitangi Laptop by Internet x Cola, not only took out the title but also the prize for the highest placed mare and the highest placed 4 year old.

Gordon and Matthew Grayling – the new National 3-Day Champions

Waitangi Jet Stream and John Twomey, winners of the CIC **.

So a clean sweep and a very successful day for this young horse and rider Dannie Lodder. Waitangi Laptop was bred by Jocelyn Bayley.

In 5th place was Highwayman bred by the very successful Mamaku Stud by Steal the Show out of Hino. And in joint 6th place was Henton Attorney General bred by Bridget Sutton by Anamour x Delphi.

So Warmbloods were once again in the line up.

Gordon does it again!

With rider Matthew Grayling, the combination has qualified for August's World Equestrian Games in Aachen.

Gordon (Voltaire II) and Matthew Grayling led the Advanced division from start to finish, with a great performance all round. He was faultless cross country and did a superb show jumping round, finishing well within the time and making it look effortless. Gordon was bred by Robyn Penno.

Indeed it was a great day for Warmbloods. The winner of the CIC ** was Waitangi Jet Stream – again by Internet x Quiz and ridden by John Twomey. They picked up 8 faults in the show jumping but this was good enough to retain the lead.

Not only did John Twomey win the 2-star, but also the CIC * Novice Championship riding Highly Recommended. This horse is by Brilliant Invader out of Diversity (Distlefink), that very successful mare owned by Sarah Milne.

Highly Recommended won the Young Horse Championship in 2005.

In the CIC* Open Novice Class, in second place was Glamorgan Shrunk 'n Da Wash by Belmont Golden Boy and bred by Rhiannon Armistead; and in 6th place Witzaire by Witzbola x Inaminca. Witzaire was bred by Gwynne Murphy and was started by previous owner Chris Beach.

The Vollrath report

June, 2006

What happened at Vollrath Stud over the last 12 months?

From Berny and Jutta Springtime proved to be a real disaster - we had the jinks about our mares – five had tested 'positive' and we ended up with no foal at all. We would have to ask the 'colour lady' for an explanation.

Emma Hindle Preparing for the 2006 World Equestrian Games with Team Kyrklund

June, 2006

British world class performance rider Emma Hindle is preparing her star horse Lancet, a Hanoverian licensed stallion by Wenzel x Shogun xx, for the 2006 World Equestrian Games under the supervision of Kyra Kyrklund and her partner Richard White.

Hindle has returned to her former mentor and trainer Kyra Kyrklund in order to fine-tune Lancet for the 2006 World Equestrian Games hosted in Aachen, Germany, in August. Furthermore, with Richard White on the sideline she is jazzing up stallions Diamond Hit (Don Schufro x Ramino) and Fürstenreich (Florestan x Matador) for them to make their Grand Prix debut this autumn.

Emma spent five years studying with Kyrklund at the Swedish State Stud in Flyinge, Sweden, before she moved to Germany in 1998 to establish her own farm, Brookhouse Stud. She picked up the collaboration with Kyrklund and White in the early spring of 2006 and is already reaping the fruits of this revitalized tuition. Never before has Lancet looked so collected and relaxed in his work, staying up in the frame and with his nose at the right spot.

At the CDIO Aachen in May, Hindle and Lancet were the best performing British combination in the Grand Prix, earning 69.333%. A tiny mistake in the single tempi changes kept the score from going over the magical 70% marker. At the CDI Wiesbaden in June, Emma left the arena with the most thrilling feeling.

"I came out with such a great feeling. I had him there and I was so excited to have total control over him and the connection steady throughout the test," Hindle explained. "If Richard's students [Brink, Hindle, von Krusenstierna, and Kyrklund] were a team on its own in the nation's cup at Aachen, we would have finished second behind Germany," she added jokingly.

In the CDI Wiesbaden Grand Prix Kur to Music, Hindle and Lancet scored 71.750% riding to Wie Weltmeyer's old music. Emma has contracted the world famous kur composers Cees Slings & Victor Kerkhof (Anky van Grunsven's in-house kur musicians) to compose a custom made freestyle for Lancet. The kur will be ready for the new show season, which has the 2007 European Championships as highlight of the year.

With the 2006 World Equestrian Games in focus, Hindle is working progressively towards a peak. She is travelling to Kyrklund's Snow Hill Farm in Great Britain for a two-week intensive training session, which she will conclude with a show, the CDI*** Hartpury.

The Valiant Boys

March, 2006

Catherine Cameron is currently competing on the show jumping circuit with no less than four Valiant geldings, ranging in age from 4 to 9 years.

Catherine with "the boys" (L-R):
Kahurangi Tardak, Kahurangi Valentino, Alaric, and Kahurangi Manu

She has found them to be very sociable horses, they are extremely playful and really enjoy their work.

Catherine says they are very athletic and intelligent and good to work with. They all love to jump!

Kahurangi Tardak (Valiant / Abby) is a 16hh, 9 year old grey gelding owned by Bing and Nola Allen, on whom she is completing her 3rd season. He is the one that needs the most reassurance and is quite nervy but sweet tempered. This season Tardak competed in the World Cup series and finished 6th. At the end of last season he finished 3rd in the final World Cup round at Ti Papa. This was his introduction to World Cup competition. Catherine got the ride on Tardak as a 7-year old and he finished a creditable 4th in the Cushionride series at the time.

Kahurangi Valentino (Valiant /Abby) is a 16.1hh 7 year old bay gelding, owned by Kaurangi Farms and Catherine, with a very cruisy temperament and also really brave, which shows in his extravagant jumping style. This is his 2nd season in competition and Catherine says he has come a long way in a short time. This horse was 5th at the Young Horse Show both as a 6 year old and 7 year old and recently won the 7 year old class at Kumeu 3-star show.

Alaric (Valiant / Psalm) is a 16.3 hh 5 year old bay gelding owned by Gerrit and Jenny Beker. Catherine says he finds everything easy and is well suited to the discipline. Alaric has made a good start to his jumping career and is currently joint leader in the 5 year old series. He was placed 2nd in the 5 year old championships at the Young Horse Show in Taupo.

Kahurangi Manu (Valiant / Lilly) is a 16.3hh 4 year old bay gelding also owned by Bing and Nola Allen. Manu is the gentle giant and is very laid back, taking everything in his stride. He has had half a season of competition and shows a lot of promise. This horse won the 4 year old show hunter championship at the Young Horse Show in Taupo.

After riding Tardak and finding his jumping ability, it is not surprising that Catherine was pleased to ride the other Valiant geldings. Her success with these points to their having an inherited ability and also to a compatibility with her. There will no doubt be more Valiant horses for Catherine's stable in the future.
