Reports on/from:
Following on from the success of Vantage with John Twomey at the Taupo 3DE last year - there is another potential star on the rise.
Matthew Grayling won the NZ qualifier for the 2005 FEI Eventing World Cup at Kihikihi riding Gordon, a bay warmblood gelding by Voltaire II. Gordon is only eight and relatively inexperienced so will not be started at the finals in Malmo, Sweden in August. He will be aimed at the trans-Tasman team to compete at the Adelaide CCI**** later this year. Gordon's dressage score of 46.9 (68.75%) got him off to a good start. His faultless show jumping round and 17.2 time penalties across country, sealed the win.
Please see our results page for the performances of warmbloods at the Horse of the Year show in Hastings.
He won his age class then went on to win the championship title. Reserve was Lucy Olphert on Tiara. Senator was also double clear in his 5 yr old SJ class. Pico Bello was 2nd in the 7 yr old class behind John Cottle on Cool Bananas and 2nd in the 1-star grand prix behind the same horse again.
Stallions with progeny competing in Horse Trials successfully, include Gruen Horn du Trichon, Jaguar, Voltaire, Witzbold, Distelfink and Loewenherz. Some of these horses were successful last year and some are just beginning their careers.
At Hawkes Bay two horses by Loewenherz competed. Rakaunui Mastermind, out of the Hanoverian Pr. St. mare Margarita, won his Novice class, and Rakaunui Sweet Deal (Loewenherz/Solitaire/ The Joker) was 2nd in the Training Class at her first outing.
Heike McLean with Daniella is having a successful season and drew the wild card so will be competing in the FEI Dressage Finals. Daniella is by Falkensee out of Daretta xx. Other Warmbloods competing are J.K.Luciano (Lauren Miller) and J.K.L’Amour (Jenny Scotter).
There are four horses by Falkensee qualified for the FEI World Challange:
It was with regret that we learned of the recent death of Flugelmann, from a twisted bowel. He was retired in May 1996 and since then, has had a happy retirement with Joy and Brian Savage, who bred him, in Kakahi. He was out of "Kukri", a Thoroughbred mare belonging to the Savages, and by Wohler II. His dam returned from Berkahn's stud with her new foal, Flugel Kommandant and a positive test. However, she did not hold and a few weeks later was seen in season again. Wohler II was about to leave for the South Island but a quick trip back to Ngaruawahia was in time and the result was Flugelmann – a very worthwhile trip!
Flugelmann was born at Kakahi, near Taumaranui in February 1980. In his earlier years he was ridden by Caroline Isles (Joy and Brian’s daughter) and competed around the local shows with considerable success. At seven years old his eventing career began with Paul O'Brien at Pukekohe. His biggest win was in December 1989 when he won the Toyota Young Rider Championship at Paekakariki. The partnership competed at other North Island events with success and when Paul left for England, after they had a couple of seasons together, Flugelmann was only 3 points off Advanced. Shortly afterwards Flugelmann took up residence with Bryce and Michelle Newman at Tokoroa and later at Sanson. He won the Forest Gate Trophy 1995 and the National Accumulator points award for 2 successive seasons in 1993-94 and 1994-95, and was second in 1995-96.
Flugelmann retired from eventing at the age of 16 and continued to do some showing work and RTR jumping for a few years. He passed away on 9th October 2004, aged 24 years. His full brother, Flugel Kommandant still lives in Kakahi and missed his paddock mate dreadfully for a few days.
